The job: a colony in an Oakland Park roof
This job was a honey bee colony living in a roof in Oakland Park. On Facebook we summed it up as “piece by piece, frame by frame,” and that is how a live removal goes. There is no fast way to move a whole colony without hurting it.
We got to the colony in the roof, cut the comb out one piece at a time, and moved it with the bees. When we were done, the whole colony went home to our apiary alive.
Nothing got sprayed. No bees got killed. We never kill bees on any job.
Why the comb has to come out of the roof
The comb is the colony’s home. It holds the honey, the pollen and the young bees. If someone kills the bees and leaves the comb in a roof, the honey melts in our heat. It can leak through the ceiling, stain it and draw ants and roaches. The smell can also bring the next swarm right back to the same spot.
Taking the comb out with the bees fixes both problems. The colony lives, and the honey is out of your roof.
Seeing bees going in and out of your roof?
- Keep people and pets away from the spot where they fly in.
- Do not spray them, and do not seal the gap. Trapped bees look for another way out, sometimes into the attic or the house.
- Text us a photo of the bees and the gap from the ground.
