When you own a live bee removal company like GotBeez, every phone call brings a new adventure. We’ve seen bees move into chimneys, water meter boxes, and even children’s toy chests. But last week, a call from a homeowner in Lake Worth provided one of the most uniquely South Florida scenarios yet: a thriving honeybee colony had decided to set up their permanent residence inside a backyard BBQ grill.
The Lake Worth Grill Guardian
I took the call myself. The customer, bless their heart, was equal parts exasperated and amused. “We haven’t fired up the grill in a few months,” they explained, “and now every time I lift the lid, it’s buzzing! I think we have a whole hive in our barbecue.”
To a beekeeper, this makes perfect sense. A grill provides a clean, dark, sheltered cavity, basically, a five-star hotel for a migrating swarm. But to the homeowner, it’s a problem that needs a professional, safe, and live solution.
We packed up the specialized tools we use for non-lethal removal and headed over to Lake Worth. When we arrived, the backyard was beautiful, and the grill looked completely innocent… until we peeked inside. Sure enough, beautiful, fresh honey comb was being drawn out and attached to the inner workings of the grill. It was a busy little city of bees!
Our Mission: A Quick, Fun Rescue
Our goal at GotBeez is always the same: safely re-home the bees without causing damage to the property, the structure, or the appliances, in this case, the grill!
This particular job was a real treat because it was so straightforward. Unlike a difficult removal inside a block wall, the grill offered relatively easy access. We carefully and gently smoked the bees to calm them, located the queen, and began the delicate process of cutting out the comb and securing the bees into a specialized transport box.
I’m happy to report that this was one of those quick, fun jobs we love: no damage to the house or the grill was necessary. We secured every last bee and every bit of comb, ensuring the customer’s backyard was bee-free and ready for their next cookout.
From Bee-B-Q to Bee Sanctuary
The best part of this story is the happy ending for the bees. After a quick ride back to our apiary, the entire colony was transferred into a new, proper hive box. They are now busy flying, foraging, and contributing to the local ecosystem here in South Florida.
It’s a great reminder that when you see a swarm or hive, you don’t have to resort to extermination. With the right techniques and a little patience, you can turn a backyard problem into a pollinator rescue. We successfully saved the hive, and more importantly, we prevented a major Bee-BQ disaster!
